A Half Degree Off Course

It doesn’t seem like a lot, but a half degree off course can get a ship in a whole lot of trouble. When looking at the ship’s gyrocompass, a half degree is barely noticeable unless the deck watch is paying close attention.

Over time, the ship drifts further and further off the intended track and can end up in dangerous waters…and it might even run aground. This parallels something that I have noticed happening in society. The Devil himself has been getting society ever-so-slightly off course over the last several decades. This became evident when I was talking with three Soldiers a week or so ago.

I actually unintentionally found this out when I was trying to explain that sin was sin, and it is all bad. All sin is sin. All sin produces wages of death (Romans 3:23). However, I saw just how conditioned this generation is as to the acceptance of certain sin. In the discussion, I likened pedophilia and homosexuality (sexual immorality) and murder/genocide with telling a little white lie or stealing something of an insignificant value. They all objected to the correlation of pedophilia with homosexuality. Homosexuality, they say (even the professed Christian) is not a sin. They “know” people who are born gay so it is not a choice…and consequently it is not a sin. They all agreed that pedophiles, however, are disgusting and should be punished. All sin is disgusting and revolting to God. It should be equally revolting be to each and every believer as well. Isn’t it interesting to see how the Devil has deceived this generation that homosexuality is not sin?

In 1987 when I signed up for the Navy, a screening question was asked to determine if an enlistee was gay or had any gay experiences. It was a disqualifier to entering the military. There was a stigma attached to that form of sexual immorality and it only operated in the shadows of society as a subculture. Everyone knew it was a sin and it was shameful to be a proponent of it and especially shameful for those engaged in that type of lifestyle. Today, there is no shame associated with it and it is given credibility by governments and perverse organizations such as the LGBTQ.

Let’s go back another couple decades at the “sexual revolution”. This made casual sex (i.e., adultery, fornication, and even pornography) a societal norm. Prior to that, it was shameful to have sex out of wedlock and promiscuity led to a bad reputation. It is hardly worth mentioning as a sin in today’s society because it is actually seen as a normal part of having a relationship.

Other forms of sexual immorality back many years ago, even back to biblical times, have garnered the same reaction that these Soldiers had to pedophilia. Why? Because it is all sin. Sexual immorality. Violations of God’s commandments and abominations before a righteous Creator. Yet, Satan has gotten us slowly off course and here we are: accepting of most forms of sexual immorality exclusive of pedophilia and bestiality. The prophet Isaiah wrote “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter” (5:20).

I ask you, is all sexual immorality sin? I assert that sexual immorality is any type of sexual conduct outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. What exactly happened that over the last decades adultery, fornication, pornography and homosexuality became acceptable? When did gender become fluid? This perversion parades around in the light of day because of the boldness of the evil and the cowardice of the Church to call sin: sin! It happened a little at a time…a half degree off course here and there.

In the decades to come, will pedophiles be “born that way” and be accepted as members of society living in their sexual sin? Will it be legal to marry your pet and bestow all the legal privileges of a spouse to an animal? I am going to tell you this, friends: this is exactly what will happen if Christians and the Church continue failing to be bold in God’s truth and His Word.

Where this ends only God knows, but we know that it ends once and for all after the Great Tribulation and after the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ. The question remains: what do we do in the mean time? We need to speak out against ALL sin, to include sexual immorality that the government and society both condone and celebrate. We must love those engaged in sin, even in these types of sin, because God loves them. Jesus died for them just like He did for you and me. The difference is that these lost sinners don’t know saving faith in Christ yet. Keep strong and keep reaching out to them with the truth. Paul writes in Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Share the Word of God with them. Hearing it can produce the faith necessary for salvation. Share the Word, like in all things, with love.

So, we need to take over the helm and get this ship back on course…God’s course. Don’t be discouraged because this won’t happen over night. We did not get to where we are morally over night, so the return to morality will also be slow. Be patient and endure in truth and love.

Love the sinner, hate the sin.
